New Delhi: As India said it will allow FDI from Pakistan, BJP on Saturday cautioned on its possible misuse by "undeserving elements" while Congress said the government will be vigilant on security aspects.
"We have always believed that trade with neighbours and all countries is always the best way forward because trade is the need of the hour for consumers from all sides. It is the consumers who will benefit from this," BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said.
He, however, had a word of caution for the government. "Government has to be definitely concerned about the threats and the open channels being used by some undeserving elements," Javadekar said.
Asked to elaborate on BJP's concerns, Javadekar said just as India is cautious about Chinese exports posing a danger, products from Pakistan should also be looked at with a degree of caution.
Congress spokesman Rashid Alvi said the government was always concerned about security. "The government will be vigilant on the security aspects while allowing FDI from Pakistan," Alvi said.
"We would like to have good relations with all our neighborung countries, including Pakistan, and in this respect we have allowed FDI from Pakistan," he said.
Alvi said he hoped that the new measures will not only enhance trade but strengthen the bilateral relationship. Commerce Minister Anand Sharma had said yesterday that India had taken an in-principle decision as part of trade normalisation process to allow foreign direct investment from Pakistan.
