New Delhi: Even when there is a huge outcry over the treatment meted out by a Bharatiya Janata Party MLA to a horse in Uttarakhand, legally the punishment for cruelty against animal is very little. The Prevention of Animal Cruelty Act prescribes a maximum fine of Rs 50 for animal cruelty.

If a person repeats the same offense within 3 years, the maximum fine goes upto Rs 100.

Meanwhile, the trouble is mounting for Dehradun BJP MLA Ganesh Joshi who was caught on camera mercilessly beating a horse.

Union Minister Maneka Gandhi has written to Uttarakhand DGP seeking strict action against the BJP MLA. On Wednesday, Maneka had lashed out at Joshi saying he has brought bad name to the party and should be expelled.

Claiming innocence, Joshi said, "Things are slowly unravelling. It is clear that I did nothing. It does not matter how it happened but as human beings we are saddened by this incident and that is why we came to see him."

But the animal activists are demanding Joshi's arrest. "We demand that this MLA be arrested. It has been 3 days and he still has not been arrested. We also demand that he be expelled from the party," said MLA Gauri Maulekhi.
