BJP won't use lotus symbol for World Yoga Day, asks leaders not to politicise it
The circular clearly states that only a tricolour and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's photograph is to be used at the Yoga Day events.

New Delhi: Amid the row over World Yoga Day on June 21, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday asked party leaders not to use the lotus symbol on the occasion and not to politicise the event.

The BJP very clearly is trying to send out the message that the party will not be associated with the event but will only be organising it. Strict instructions and notices have been sent to all the party offices stating that no posters, banners or party symbols are to be used at the yoga day event.

The circular clearly also states that only the Indian flag and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's photograph are to be used at the Yoga Day events.

"No celebration should look like it is organised by the party. It should look like a festival of India," said the BJP. A CD on yoga has been given to all the MPs and MLAs which would be shown to the people during the event.

The idea for declaring an International Day of Yoga at the United Nations was formally proposed by Prime Minister Modi in his maiden address to the 69th General Assembly session in September 2014.

He had indicated that June 21, one of the two solstices, which is the longest day in the Northern Hemisphere, has special significance in many parts of the world, and could be considered for adoption as the International Day of Yoga by the United Nations each year.

Following Modi's UN address, the Permanent Mission of India had convened three rounds of informal consultations with all 193 member states of the United Nations.

A final text of the Resolution, on which all the participating countries agreed, was reached on October 22.
