Kolkata: The opposition Left Front and Congress on Tuesday demanded immediate deployment of the army to control the situation at Baduria in North 24 Parganas district where communal clashes have broken out over an "objectionable" post on Facebook.

The CPI(M) state secretary Surya Kanta Mishra demanded that an all-party meeting be convened on this issue to chalk a way out to tackle the situation.

"We demand all party meeting and army deployment. Debate on phone call is unwanted. All of us must stand united for peace and unity. We have to defeat polarisation politics," Mishra said.

State Congress president Adhir Chowdhury said Army should be immediately deployed in the area to avoid any untoward incident.

The state government rushed 400 troops of paramilitary BSF today to assist the police in containing the situation at Baduria under Basirhat sub-division of North 24 Parganas district.

Police had said "Clashes took place at Baduria since Monday following an objectionable Facebook post by a youth who was arrested."

Shops, markets were shut down in Baduria as tension prevailed and spread to adjacent areas like Keosha market, Banshtala, Ramchandrapur, and Tentulia, they said.

The mob put up road blockades at many places and attacked members of other community besides destroying many shops, they said.

The demonstration was held in front of the Baduria police station by the people of one community.
