New Delhi: Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav has been hitting out at the Congress regularly for the last few days. The Congress, aware that Mulayam's 21 MPs are very crucial to the survival of the UPA government, has not been coming out strongly against the Uttar Pradesh leaders even though some of its leaders have spoken against him.
After Union Minister Beni Prasad Verma's controversial remarks against Mulayam, the Samajwadi Party had taken a very strong stand and even Congress General Secretary Digvijaya Singh, who had targeted Mulayam a few days ago, has been maintaining silence is remain silent revealing the Congress's helplessness.
When Mulayam took on the Congress while addressing rally at his native village Saifai, he made it clear that he wants to win as many seats as possible in the next Lok Sabha elections. His bargaining power will increase if he gets a large number of seats, and if he fails to do very well, then he can always support the Congress.
The scenario is almost similar to what was witnessed during the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections when Rahul Gandhi and Digvijaya Singh had targeted the Samajwadi Party, but after the polls the two parties came together.
But with the Congress choosing to remain silent and Digvijaya Singh saying that Mulayam is a political leader and he is free to express his views shows that the Congress is aware of the ground realities. The party knows that the UPA government is in a precarious condition and cannot afford to antagonise Mulayam specially after the row over Beni Prasad Verma's controversial comments.
A few days ago when Mulayam had praised BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani then Digvijaya Singh had said that for some parties, politics is only about power and their stand changes as the political landscape changes.
