Panaji: Goa Police on Thursday registered an FIR against Tourism Minister Fransisco Pacheco and 11 others for allegedly extorting money from a casino operating in a five-star hotel.
Pacheco was booked under various sections of IPC for unlawful assembly in the casino without proper entry ticket, threatening the staff with dire consequences and pressurising the dealer to pay Rs 3.69 lakh under the pretext of winning the amount on roulette, police said.
SP (Crime Branch) Chandrakant Salgaoncar said the casino management had lodged a complaint against the NCP minister and 11 others, including the owner of a reputed restaurant in beach belt of Goa.
Ashok Kumar Rao of Treasures Casino, a company running gaming business in Majorda Beach resort in South Goa, had complained that from May 30 to June 1, Pacheco along with others committed the offence.
The state police had earlier received a complaint from the minister accusing the Casino management of cheating him to the tune of Rs 1.25 crore, which he claimed to have won in gaming. The minister's complaint said he had won Rs 1.53 crore in the game of which the casino management paid him only Rs 28 lakh.
