New Delhi: AAP MLA Rakhi Birla's birthday celebrations turned sour on Wednesday amid allegations of her receiving an expensive SUV as gift and a brawl between supporters of party MLA Rituraj Jha and a group of protesters at the venue.
Social media was abuzz with pictures of the car which forced the party to issue a clarification saying the car belonged to a party volunteer.
"The Scorpio in question belongs to a volunteer. We have already shown ownership papers. The car was delivered to him yesterday. It had nothing to do with Rakhi," AAP spokesperson Deepak Bajpai said.
Meanwhile, a group of people carrying placards had turned up in front of the venue at Mangolpuri alleging that Jha, an invitee at the celebrations, was shielding a murder accused.
"We want justice for Gurudas who was kidnapped from his office on April 10. His body was later found dumped at Jharoda Kalan. The suspects are known to Rituraj. No body is listening to us," a protester alleged.
The party claimed when the protesters tried to "barge" their way into the celebrations a minor scuffle ensued.
"Jha had launched a campaign against gambling in his constituency because of which several anti-social elements were affected. The so-called protest was a result of his proactiveness," Bajpai added.
