New Delhi: BJP leader Arun Jaitley on Tuesday criticised the UPA government for interfering in the matters related to powers of the Election Commission, saying it is making the Constitutional authority toothless.
"Government is trying to take away EC's power. Congress leaders have absolutely no concern for the EC's Model Code of Conduct. Government is making EC toothless," he said.
On the issue of National Counter-Terrorism Council (NCTC), he said the government took the decision on the law without informing the states.
"If the government is raising issue of federal system, then its a valid point by states to arise the question," Jaitley said.
The BJP leader also blamed the Home Minister, saying, "Centre cannot substitute police powers of the state, it can only aid and assist. Fight against terrorism must co-exist with federalism. BJP backs Chief Ministers who are opposing NCTC."
