Thiruvananthapuram: The State Government is committed to formulate new schemes to overcome the stagnant situation prevailing in the IT sector and to create an investment climate and attract prominent international companies to invest in Kerala, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said.

Inaugurating the CII IT Summit here on Thursday, the Chief Minister said that in the scenario in which IT trade was estimated to register a turnover of Rs 10 lakh crore in the country by 2020, intensive efforts would be made to attract a major chunk of this to Kerala.

"Kerala's strengths in the software market also lie in its pursuit of new opportunities. In fact, two key segments that have been performing really well for Kerala are e-commerce and remote processing.

"Our UDF Government has outlined many strategies and tactics to ensure the growth and development of IT in  the state," he said.

Chandy said that steps would be taken to reduce the working cost of IT companies functioning in government-owned IT parks.

"IT Special Investment Regions will be set up in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode. A new knowledge hub will be set up in Malappuram. The government will set up a platform with the representatives of IT industries regarding availability of basic infrastructure and software marketing connected with IT.

Another initiative taken up by the  government for promoting IT in Kerala is the conceptualisation of Cyberpark, a Government of Kerala  organisation planned on the lines of Technopark in  Thiruvananthapuram and Infopark in Kochi to build, operate and manage IT parks for the promotion and  development of investment in IT and ITES industries in Malabar region of Kerala," he said.

Chandy said that Smart City project would be implemented in a time-bound manner and employment opportunities would be provided to 1 lakh people.

"A Kerala model IT policy will be formulated for implementation which would provide employment to thousands of educated rural youth. Joining hands, the IT industry and the education sector will strive to promote a more successful student community and will make the general public aware of the peculiar nature of this industry," he said.

IT and Industries Minister PK Kunhalikutty said that another initiative being undertaken by the government was the development of Technocity.

"Technopark is developing 450 acres of land at Pallippuram, 5 kms north of the Technopark campus on the national highway to Kollam. This development has been conceptualised as an integrated IT township, encompassing IT/ITeS, educational institutions, and other support facilities. Technocity shall act as a single-point contact and provide all the utilities and support services, infrastructure, residential apartments, shopping malls," he said.
