New Delhi: As its core group went into a huddle to find a way forward to resolve the crisis over the Indo-US nuclear deal, the Congress on Saturday said that national interest shall continue to be the party's ‘guiding pole star’ on the matter.
In the awake of the Left party’s reaction the Congress core group met on Saturday evening to discuss the issue.
The Congress top brass, including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, reviewed the situation and was consulting allies on the way ahead.
A meeting of the Congress Core Group, chaired by party chief Sonia Gandhi, "noted" the statements of the Left and deliberated on the pros and cons of the matter.
After the meeting, the AICC General Secretary Janardan Dwivedi said, "The party has taken note of whatever the Left parties have said and consultations are on with our allies as also with senior party leaders."
The 90-minute meeting of the core group was attended by Singh and senior ministers Pranab Mukherjee, Shivraj Patil, A K Antony, Arjun Singh and others.
Later, Antony and Ahmed Patel held further consultations with Mukherjee at his residence.
A senior Congress leader said consultations were on and "there is nothing to worry about."
Asked whether any meeting of the Congress Working Committee has been called, Dwivedi, who is the AICC media department Chairperson, merely said it will be convened whenever it is necessary.
On Saturday, General Secretary of the Communist Party of India -Marxist (CPI-M) Prakash Karat fired a fresh salvo following the Politburo meeting in New Delhi saying that they have not endorsed the stand of the UPA government on the nuclear deal.
"The Politburo of the CPI-M has not endorsed the stand on nuclear cooperation," Prakash Karat said adding that the agreement with the US is not acceptable.
Karat said that going ahead with the nuclear deal would not serve India's interest.
