Lucknow: Six months after Mayawati took over as Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, differences seem to be cropping up between Raj Bhawan and her.
The trigger happens to be the implementation of the commissioner system in the UP police which would give the Police Commissioner, Assistant Police Commissioner and Deputy Police Commissioner magisterial powers.
After the recent serial blasts in UP, the Governor has strongly advocated the commissioner system.
“I feel the commissioner system should be implemented and a beginning can be made with two cities,” said Governor T V Rajeshwar.
In a recent police parade, the Governor, who also happens to be a former IB chief, minced no words while expressing that the state intelligence department needs to be more vigilant.
“They should be alert all year around, not just after blasts,” said Rajeshwar.
Sources say Mayawati is slightly taken aback by Governor's remark. She issued a public statement that she does not agree with the Governor.
“The time is not ripe for the implementation of commissioner system. There are several drawbacks in my police force,” she said.
The Governor's statement against Mayawati's police force is a strong signal of the emerging differences between the Raj Bhawan and the Chief Minister.
And even as differences between Mayawati and Congress are out in the open, only time will tell whether Mayawati will have to face a hostile Governor just as her arch political rival Mulayam Singh Yadav faced during his tenure as the chief minister.
