Chandigarh: On the lines of MNREGA, the UPA government is considering a scheme for urban areas, Union Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal on Saturday said.

"The main problem that the country today is facing is un-employment and like MNREGA, same scheme is likely to be started in urban areas also," said Bansal, union parliamentary affairs minister.

The UPA Government has started the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee programme with a view to give employment of 100 days to every family in the rural area of the country. The same scheme is likely to be started in urban areas also, Bansal said, according to a PIB release.

Bansal, who is also the union water resources minister and Congress' Chandigarh MP, was speaking at a function to mark the birth anniversary of the founder of the Constitution BR Ambedkar at Ambedkar Colony, Sector 56.

Bansal said democracy has flourished in India because of the great vision of Ambedkar who has taken care of all sections of the society.

The UPA Government, in order to cherish dreams of Ambedkar has undertaken many developmental schemes to benefit the common masses especially the backward and the downtrodden, Bansal said.
