New Delhi: Hemmed in by the Opposition and UPA constituents, which are protesting against petrol price hike, Congress on Friday sought to put up a brave front saying there was nothing wrong if allies express their concern on the issue.
Party spokesperson Manish Tewari also indicated that a revision in prices could be made in the next few days. "We do hope that our sentiment will be respected. We had yesterday itself said that we are fully sensitive if any step of the government puts a burden on common man even if it is required.
"Some or the other decision should be taken with the initiative of the central government, state governments and oil companies so that the burden put on people is eased," party spokesperson Manish Tewari told reporters at the AICC briefing.
A party leader speaking on condition of anonymity said that some sort of a revision of the price rise on the downward side is expected but only after a few days, most likely by month end.
The leader said that he was not ruling out the possibility of a partial roll back but only after few days. The party, apparently, is in a mood to test the waters before taking any decision on the issue, as there is a view that tough economic measures will be required to bring the economy back on track.
Asked about DMK's decision to call a state wide bandh against petrol hike in Tamil Nadu on May 30 and Mamata Banerjee's decision to lead Trinamool Congress protest in West Bengal on Saturday, Tewari said at the AICC briefing," If we as a political party can articulate our concern on the issue, it is perfectly allright if our allies have also expressed their concern. They, too, have the right."
He said that an attempt is being made to show differences in the UPA for last eight years, where none exist.
