PM's silence on controversial remarks by Sangh leaders 'most disturbing': Congress
Singhvi said what is "most disturbing is the silence at the top, the silence from India's greatest orator who can have an effect or counter-effect on such tendencies - that silence is most deplorable."

New Delhi: With VHP pushing for construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya and Sangh leaders and sympathisers making a string of controversial statements, Congress on Wednesday questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi's silence on the issue and expressed apprehension that such incidents are bound to increase in the run up to Bihar polls.

"The question is why is this climate is growing in less than 15 months (of the Modi dispensation assuming office). Such statements reflect a gutter level mentality. These incidents are bound to increase in the run up to the Bihar elections," Congress spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said.

Singhvi said what is "most disturbing is the silence at the top, the silence from India's greatest orator who can have an effect or counter-effect on such tendencies - that silence is most deplorable."

The Congress spokesman was asked about statements of VHP leader Ashok Singhal pushing for construction of Ram temple at Ayodhya and implementation of a uniform civil code claiming that the population of Hindus was decreasing.

Earlier, BJP leader Subramanian Swamy joined Singhal at a press conference in making the demand for temple construction, saying BJP manifesto for the 2014 elections had promised it and the Modi government should take steps in this regard.
