Profile of Jhakhand CM designate Raghubar Das
Das led the protests during Jaya Prakash Narayan's Sampoorna Kranti in Jamshedpur.

Five-time Jamshedpur East MLA Raghubar Das is all set to take over as the sixth chief minister of Jharkhand. Das will be the first non-tribal leader to become the state's chief minister.

The low profile Das was born on May 3, 1955. He passed matric from Bhalubasa Harijan High School and completed BSc from Jamshedpur Cooperative College after which he completed a 3 year law degree from the same college.

After his graduation, he joined Tata Steel as a labourer and is still employed with the company. His father late Chavan Ram was also a labourer with Tata Steel.

He has been active in politics since his college days. He took part in the agitation to establish a university in Jamshedpur.

Das led the protests during Jaya Prakash Narayan's Sampoorna Kranti in Jamshedpur. He was arrested and jailed in Gaya where he met many senior leaders. He was also jailed during Emergency imposed by the then prime minister Indira Gandhi.

Das joined the Janata Party in 1977 and in 1980 he joined BJP as one of its founding member.

He took part in BJP's first Nation Committee meeting in Mumbai in 1980. He was then appointed as Sitaramdera Mandal chief. He then became Jamshedpur city BJP secretary and then became the vice president.

He won his first election in 1995 from Jamshedpur East to become an MLA in Bihar Assembly. He has been winning from the seat ever since.

He became Jharkhand BJP chief in 2004-05. Under his leadership, the BJP won 30 seats in Jharkhand Assembly in the 2005 election. He was again the BJP chief during the 2009 Lok Sabha elections. He became a Vice President in the BJP National Committee on August 16, 2014.
