Rahul will have to prove himself, says Sonia
The name or experience of the family only gives you a headstart she said.

New Delhi: Congress President Sonia Gandhi, in an interaction with Vir Sanghvi at the HT Leadership Summit on Friday said her MP son Rahul Gandhi may have got a headstart but he will have to work hard to prove himself and succeed.

"The name of the family or experience of the family gives you a headstart, it helps in the beginning. But in our system, which is a democratic one, you have to prove yourself," news agency PTI quoted Sonia as saying.

Rahul's appointment last month as one of the Congress party's general secretaries is being widely read as a sign that it was the first step towards becoming his Sonia’s Gandhi’s successor.

However, Sonia dismissed those speculations and said, “unless you prove yourself, you cannot go ahead and I think this is not only in politics, this is so in every sphere of activity, whether it is business or any other profession”.

When asked question whether Rahul’s appointment was the first step for a rapid rise, Sonia said, "I don't see this.”

“He himself would not want to see himself as that,” the Congress president added.

To a question as to what happens next to Rahul, she said, "he has to work hard. He is planning to work hard. He is already beginning."

When the Vir Sanghvi mistakenly referred to her non-existing daughter-in-law as one of her family members and asked whether she takes decisions after consulting her and her son and daughter, Sonia remarked, "I don't have a daughter-in-law."

This led to peals of laughter in the audience, which included Rahul, sister Priyanka Gandhi and her husband Robert Vadra.
