Samajwadi Party Workers Await 'Cycle Yatra' As Akhilesh Yadav Postpones it for Second Time

Lucknow: Speculations are abound after Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav’s proposed ‘Cycle Yatra’ was postponed for the second time.

Yadav had announced a 50-km long cycle yatra in September from Kannauj which was to be flagged off by ‘demonetisation baby’ Khajanchi. It was later postponed to November.

While SP leaders attribute the decision to postpone the rally to the Assembly elections in five states, political analysts have identified his move as an act of “over-confidence.”

Former BBC journalist and political analyst Ram Dutt Tripathi said, “We will have to understand one fact: Akhilesh Yadav did not become leader by struggle like his father Mulayam Singh Yadav did. He is a son of a prominent politician and that was his opening to politics. On the other hand, his father started from the grassroots, because of which massive public support is on their side.”

Tripathi added that even though the actual reason behind the delay is best known to Akhilesh only, he does seem confident he will get votes as his party is the main opposition in the state.

Dismissing all speculations, a Samajwadi Party spokesperson said the ‘Cycle Yatra’ has been postponed on account of the Assembly elections. “Our leaders have been busy planning political rallies in election-bound states. A meeting will be soon held to decide upon a new suitable date for the yatra shortly,” he said.

Akhilesh had recently announced that he will be contesting from the Lok Sabha constituency of Kannauj, which is his wife Dimple Yadav’s parliamentary constituency.

As preparation for 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the SP chief said he will be undertaking one cycle rally every month to different parts of the state. The rally was to culminate at a stretch of Lucknow- Agra Expressway, which witnessed the touchdown of the Indian Air Force combat jets during the air show held to mark the highway’s inauguration in November, 2016

The aim, Akhilesh said, is to infiltrate all the districts of the state and highlight the failures of the Modi government.
