New Delhi: As the Narendra Modi government is close to finalising the new Governors, sources now say that Kerala Governor Sheila Dikshit is likely to resign on Monday evening. However, Dikshit continues to deny the reports about her stepping down, calling them 'speculation'.
"These are just speculations," said Dikhsit after her meeting with Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday, when asked whether she would resign as Kerala Governor. Sheila is also scheduled to meet President Pranab Mukherjee later in the evening.
On Sunday, Maharashtra Governor K Sankaranarayanan had also resigned after he was transferred to Mizoram for the remainder of his tenure till 2017.
Sankaranarayanan was among the first batch of governors telephoned by Home Secretary Anil Goswami to put in their papers after change of government at the Centre.
Earlier, the NDA government had sacked Mizoram Governor Kamla Beniwal, who had served in Gujarat earlier and had a running battle with Narendra Modi when he was the state's Chief Minister.
Virendra Kataria, a former Congress leader, was also sacked as Puducherry Lieutenant Governor in July.
Four other Governors -- MK Narayanan (West Bengal), Ashwani Kumar (Nagaland), BL Joshi (UP) and Shekhar Dutt (Chhattisgarh) had put in their papers apparently after they were telephoned by the Union Home Secretary.
Uttrakhand Governor Aziz Qureshi has challenged Modi government's moves to ease him out of office, bringing the controversy over removal of UPA-appointed Governors under judicial lens.
