Samsung has consistently introduced new privacy and security features for its phones and tablets. Building on established safeguards such as Knox, Samsung Pass and Secure Folder, Samsung has now announced significant upgrades to its Galaxy device security platform.
The company is adding two new features: Quick Share Private Sharing and Samsung Cloud Enhanced Data Protection. These enhancements aim to provide Galaxy smartphone and tablet users with greater control over their data stored in the Samsung Cloud and bolster its security.
Quick Share Private Sharing
Quick Share Private Sharing is a new mode introduced within Samsung’s Quick Share feature, designed to enable secure file sharing among Samsung devices. This mode allows users to set expiration timers for shared files, ensuring that the files become inaccessible once the timer expires. Additionally, users can restrict access by specifying who can view and access the shared files. Importantly, these settings can be adjusted at any time to maintain control over file visibility.
Moreover, files shared through Quick Share Private Sharing are viewable only in read-only format by the recipient, preventing further sharing. Samsung also asserts that screenshots are blocked to maintain privacy, and the files are secured with “blockchain-based encryption technology” to ensure robust protection.
After choosing Quick Share while sharing files, users can turn on the feature by clicking the three-dot button on the top right corner of the screen. Once this mode is on, users can share up to 20 files and a maximum limit of 200 MB.
However, it is worth noting that this feature only works between Samsung devices. Moreover, this feature is limited to images (.jpg, .jpeg, .png, .gif, .bmp, .webp, .heic, .dng), audio files (.mp3, .wav, .ogg, and .m4a), videos (.mp4, .mkv, .webm, 3gp, and .3g2) and documents (.pdf and .txt).
Samsung Cloud Enhanced Data Protection
Starting with the Galaxy S24 series, Samsung has introduced the Enhanced Data Protection feature for Samsung Cloud. The new feature offers end-to-end encryption for all synced data and backups, meaning that data stored in your Samsung Cloud account can only be decrypted on the original Samsung device. This improvement provides robust security even if the server storing the data is compromised.
Users can access this feature by navigating to their device settings, followed by the security and privacy options. Then, users need to click on more security settings and enhanced data protection. Once done, turn on the toggles for ‘Encrypt Backup Data’ and ‘Encrypt Synced Data.’ When you activate this feature, you will receive a recovery code for regaining access to your Samsung account if needed.
