New Delhi: Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde on Saturday backtracked from his remark that he wanted to see NCP chief Sharad Pawar become the Prime Minister. "I was misquoted, we want to make Rahul Gandhi the PM," Shinde said.

Shinde had earlier in the day said that he would be happy to see Pawar become the Prime Minister. "I will be happy if Pawar becomes PM. He has been trying since 1992. But because of Delhi's politics he hasn't been able to do so."

His U-turn comes after the NCP made it clear that party chief Sharad Pawar was not in the race for the prime minister's post in 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Party spokesperson Nawab Malik said, "We are grateful for Shinde's comment, our leader has the capibilty to be a good PM. But we are aware of our party's strength, and we want to clarify that Sharad Pawar is not in PM's race."

Meanwhile, Congress's crucial All India Congress Committee (AICC) meeting is scheduled to be held on January 17 where Rahul Gandhi is likely to be anointed as the PM candidate.
