Lucknow: The Kanpur district administration allegedly cut down up to two dozen trees on the campus of an educational institution to prepare a helipad for Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
Adityanath was the chief guest at a programme organised in Harcourt Butler Technical University, Kanpur on January 27.
Samajwadi Party leaders staged a unique protest against it by performing last rites of the trees that were cut in Kanpur on Wednesday.
Protesters put white shrouds over the stems of the trees which had been cut and prayed for the soul of the trees. After that, they planted saplings at the spot where the trees were cut.
As per information, some of the trees that were cut down to ensure safe landing of CM’s helicopter at HBTU Kanpur, were as old as 40 to 50 years. They were planted alongside a park frequented by walkers and the students of HBTU.
SP MLA from Arya Nagar, Amitabh Bajapi, said that the cutting of the trees was illegal and these trees provided shade to the people of HBTU campus. “SP national president and former UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav got five crore trees planted, which got our state's name registered in the prestigious Guinness Book of World Records. The Yogi government is getting trees cut illegally which is worth condemning. We will ensure FIR against those who are guilty in the matter,” he said.
Meanwhile, the District Magistrate, Kanpur, Surendra Singh, said that all norms were followed and whatever required was done to ensure safe landing of the Chief Minister's helicopter. Media in-charge, HBTU, Prof Manoj Shukla said that HBTU administration is nothing to do with the cutting of the trees and the decision for the same had been taken by the district administration.
