Visit Naxal-affected areas: Chidambaram to CMs
The Home Minister said Chief Ministers should spend a night in the Naxal-affected areas.

New Delhi: Terming Naxal menace and not terrorism as the most violent movement in the country, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram on Tuesday suggested Chief Ministers Of the Left Wing Extremism affected states to first take villagers into confidence.

"The battle is to restore hearts and minds. Not many Chief Ministers and Ministers have visited the affected areas. They should spend a night there," Chidambaram said.

"For any reason, villagers think the naxals are their friends and adversary is the govt, we cannot win this battle," he added.

While adding that the paramilitary forces which are being used to tackle the problem have its limitations, he said, "CRPF is supposed to be a fighting force. How can CRPF be used as a static force? CISF is not trained for anti-Naxal activities and it's not possible to recruit security officials easily. A lot of responsibility lies with state government."

He pointed out that states have a more important role to play and the Centre can support them only by providing funds and material support. "We have 83 Left Wing Extremism (LWE) affected districts. State government can rightly guard the rights of these districts and govern these districts. Centre can supports in terms funds and other needs," he said.

On the ideology behind the movement, he said, "Goal of Left Wing Extremism is to withdraw parliamentary democracy and bring dictatorship. The methods are extremely violent. They have well organised people liberations army and until they come to table, we must acknowledge their goals are different from goal of elected governments."
