With Only 4 Hit Films In 2023, Malayalam Producers Worry About Industry’s Finances
This year, the Malayalam cinema gave us a range of versatile films, directed by up-and-coming filmmakers.

2023 was a successful year for South Indian cinema. Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam films made a lasting impact on the audience. The Malayalam cinema gave us several big hits this year; but according to reports, the majority of Malayalam films went unnoticed in the theatres. This year, the Malayalam cinema gave us a range of versatile films, directed by up-and-coming filmmakers. Veteran actors like Mammootty impressed the audience with their talent in fresh and unexpected roles. Even though the Malayalam cinema gave us some of the best works this year, the financial situation of the industry is worrisome. According to reports, producers are worried that despite the release of a lot of films over the years, only a few are able to gross well at the box-office. The Producers Association said in an interview that this year only four Malayalam films were able to perform well at the box-office.

Some of the superhit Malayalam films of 2023 include 2018, directed by Jude Antony Joseph, Romancham by Jithu Madhavan, RDX by Nahas Hidayat, and Kannur Squad by Mammootty and Robert Varghese Raj. The reports further state that more than a dozen of the films were able to avoid huge losses, thanks to the OTT digital rights and other businesses. The large number of flop films in the industry is a source of concern for the producers.

The Producers Association said that the reason behind such a situation is the Covid-19 pandemic. A lot of films were delayed because of it, which were then released in theatres around the same time. Apart from that, the increase in the number of films being made in the industry in general, could also be a reason for the losses, reports say.

The producers also stated that the increased salary of the actors, along with the location rent, increases a film’s budget. The government’s increased tax money on cinema is also a problem.

Last year, around 85 percent of Malayalam films released performed well at the box-office.
