New York: A New York-based firm, KeyMe, has developed an iOS app that helps users duplicate their keys by simply taking a photo and uploading it to the cloud.
One needs to take a picture of their home, office or car key which is then uploaded to the company's system. The duplicate key is delivered to the user via mail.
Michael Harbolt, KeyMe's vice president of marketing, said "we've made hundreds of thousands of keys."
KeyMe has almost two dozen automated locations in the greater New York City area, and others in states like Florida, Arizona and Arkansas.
Alternately, one can also get they new key printed in less than a minute at one of KeyMe's kiosks.
To secure the process of duplication, the app requires users to photograph both sides of the key with blank white sheet of paper in the background. KeyMe also requires fingerprint of the user for printing through its kiosks along with an e-mail account to sign up and a credit card and address to avoid abuse.
Harbolt assured that they haven't had one instance of their keys being used in a crime.
