Indian Govt Warns Windows Users With AMD Processors About Major Security Risk: Here’s What We Know
AMD processors are available on enterprise-level systems, desktop PCs and mobile laptops that are used by millions in the country.

Looks like Windows users just can’t catch a break lately. First it was the major CrowdStrike outage shutting their systems down and now, the Windows PC users with AMD-powered systems have got a major security alert from the Indian government which affects millions of machines.

The latest risk note comes via the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) this week, giving you details about the issue and how serious the vulnerability can become for all the people using machines powered by AMD processors.

AMD Processor Security Risk – What We Know

The CERT-In gives a detailed note on the issue called SinkClose which is exclusively affecting a slew of AMD processors and components. “A CPU vulnerability called SinkClose has been reported in AMD processors which could be exploited by an attacker with Kernel-level (Ring 0) privileges to gain Ring -2 privileges and install malware, potentially leading to the complete compromise of the vulnerable system,” CERT-In alerts millions of Windows users in the country.

In simple words, the security issue can be targeted at the major privileges that give high-level control of a Windows system powered by the affected AMD processors, allowing hackers to not only disable security features on the device but plant malicious software on the system as well.

AMD Processors Affected By SinkClose Security Issue

– AMD EPYC 1,2,3, and 4-gen processors

– AMD Instinct MI300A

– AMD EPYC Embedded 3000, 70002, 7003, 9003

– AMD Ryzen Embedded R1000, R2000, R5000, R7000, V1000, V2000, V3000

– AMD Ryzen desktop processor series 3000, 5000, 7000

– AMD Ryzen desktop processor series with Radeon Graphics series 4000, 5000, 8000

That is a wide lineup of AMD processors, targeting both the desktop and mobile versions. Some of the affected processors have already got their fix in the form of patches while others are expected to get them by October this year.
