New Delhi: Microsoft has confirmed that it will stop manufacturing the Surface 3 by the end of December, 2016. The low-cost Windows tablet has been in the market for more than a year.
The company said that there has been strong demand and satisfaction for the Atom-based tablet but did not say if it will launch the next iteration of the Surface 3.
The tablet will be available through Microsoft Stores but only till stocks last, ZDNet notes.
Aimed at budget-conscious consumers and students, the Microsoft Surface 3 was launched in May 2015 at $499 and powered by Windows 8.1. Users could upgrade it to Windows 10 and the company also introduced an LTE version of the tablet.
As there are better hardware available like the Surface Pro 4 and the Surface Book, it does seem like a wise decision to discontinue production of the old-generation tablet that is now a hard-sell as a laptop replacement. There have been reports about a certain 'Redstone 2' tablet that might be the successor of Surface 3.
Recently, Apple also announced that it was discontinuing its Thunderbolt display, which has not received any update from five years, and was redirecting customers to third-party displays which are equally good.
