Bollywood actress Taapsee Pannu is among the most tech-savvy stars featured so far in our Star Tech series. On her recent visit to the News18.com office, Taapsee shared with us her tech side and recounted her experience as a software developer.
An engineering graduate, Taapsee (along with her two other friends) had developed an app called FontSwap during the final year of her course. The app let users change fonts used in the iPhone. Emphasising on the relevance of the app, Taapsee said, “Now obviously you have many of them (such apps). But say, 6-7 years ago, it was a first-of-its-kind app”. The app, however, was not submitted to the App Store because of its tedious approval process, she added.
Taapsee, however, didn’t pursue a career in engineering after college. She, in fact, rejected a job at Infosys for which she had been selected during a campus recruitment. “I didn’t want a 9-5 job,” she said.
The decision to move away from the tech industry, though, didn’t have an affect on her love for technology. Taapsee still tries her hand at gadgets that she finds interesting. One such device is a GoPro that she bought a couple of months ago. “It’s my latest proud possession and I am extremely happy about it. I recently went to Koh Samui on a vacation and shot pictures on it. I shot underwater pictures of my snorkeling, dives and all that”.
Explaining why she likes to carry her GoPro when travelling, Taapsee said, “I don’t travel with big groups. I sometimes travel alone, sometimes I travel with my sister. So we can’t stand and just get clicked. It gets very boring. So in this (GoPro) if you click a selfie, the length is so huge that it almost covers whatever you need to cover in the background. When you are travelling, you don’t want to click your profile pictures. You want to click what you visit. So I believe that is a perfect thing. GoPro just makes my holidays even happier.”
Besides the GoPro, her list of gadgets also includes an iPhone, MacBook Air and two iPads. She may have a wide range of Apple products, but isn’t an Apple fangirl. Her decision to not buy the Apple Watch somehow substantiates that. “I am not going to buy that. First, it looks ugly. And second, I don’t want it to be on my body all the time. At least, I can keep away my phone when I don’t want to see it,” she said.
Before moving to the iPhone, Taapsee was a BlackBerry addict. She loved her BlackBerry primarily because it had both a touchscreen and a keypad.Android, however, couldn’t woo her. “I used Android (Samsung Galaxy S2) as well, but I didn’t like it. It’s too complicated and also gets too slow after a point”.
The five apps that she can’t live without are: BookMyShow, MakeMyTrip, Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.
Instagram may be one of her favourite apps, but she doesn’t edit her own pictures. She believes that editing photos is not her cup of tea. “I am bad at editing photos. I make them uglier. I don’t even know how to use a filter properly. I have outsourced this job to my stylist. Every picture that I click I just send it to her,” she admits.
