They might be so popular as to be almost an extension of people's arms, but most Americans ditch their smartphones and return to the trusty computer when buying online.
This is in contrast with the app-only approach that some Indian e-commerce companies are taking. After Myntra, Flipkart is also planning to operating only through its mobile app from September.
The US consumer behaviour was the finding of a Gallup survey released Tuesday which said that 74 per cent of adults in the United States with smartphones usually turn to their computers for making purchases on the Internet.
The situation is similar when browsing products online or comparing prices: 62 per cent do so on their computers, while only 21 per cent use their smartphones.
Of the six online activities Gallup measured, using social media such as Facebook or Twitter is the only activity Americans say they conduct more by smartphone (44 per cent) than computer (24 per cent).
The survey was conducted via the Internet in April-May with 15,776 US adults who said they had a smartphone.
Some Indian industry experts have expressed their reservations on the move of Flipkart to go app only strategy. Kunal Shah, founder and CEO is Freecharge, questioned the app-only strategy a Facebook post.
"Based on research, most Indians have only 19-20 apps on their android smatphones. Out of this 15-odd apps are the ones that can’t be deleted. One hypothesis is users are low on memory and keep deleting apps and install them when needed. With such challenge, is “app only” is a good strategy? Maybe this explains high uninstall rates companies see?," Shah wrote.
