Belgium’s ‘Cycling Through Water’ Trail Deserves Your Attention
The unique bicycle and walking trail opened for tourists in 2016.

A stunning cycling and walking trail in Belgium that cuts through a large pond is winning over netizens who recently discovered it, all thanks to a LinkedIn post. The 212-meter track, dubbed “Cycling Through Water," is located in the middle of a pond in De Wijers nature reserve. The architectural marvel is built in such a way that it allows people to cycle or walk in the middle of the pond without getting wet even when the water reaches their eye level. The track is five feet deep and 10 feet wide. It keeps the waterway from spilling inside the track. From a distance, it appears as though cyclings and walkers are moving through the water. This project opened to the public in 2016. It is a part of the Limburg province’s efforts to improve its biking trails and promote eco-friendly tourism.

Recently, Ari Consulting Services shared a video of the “Cycling Through Water" trail on LinkedIn. This post soon gathered hundreds of reactions within a day. Commenting on it, a LinkedIn user wrote, “And now we can experience how Moses may have felt when the Red Sea waters were parted for his journey!! Thanks for the post Ari Consulting Services." Another asserted , “The engineers need a great applause."

This is not the only remarkable cycling trail in Limburg province. Near the “Cycling Through Water" trail, another trail called “Cycling Through The Trees" attracts thousands of visitors every year. The “Cycling Through The Trees" is a raised path that takes one to a height of 10 meters above the ground so that one can cycle or walk amongst the treetops. This 700-meter-long circular structure is three-meter-wide.

BuroLandschap founder Pieter Daenen who designed this structure told Dezeen magazine, “The most important thing for us was to build a structure with the lowest possible impact on the environment and the sensitive nature present. The trees were of course very important, after all, cycling through the trees would no longer make sense if trees were damaged or destroyed after the construction of the structure."

He added, “The nice thing about the construction is the round spiral shape. Cycling around in combination with cycling in height has something magical. It seems as if visitors are becoming children again. You often see visitors who drive around several times. Moreover, the ride of 600 meters is quite pleasant and not too hard, even if your condition is not too good."
