Cala The Popular ‘I Go Meow’ Cat Dies
Cala became a viral sensation for her strange “meow” that sounded like “I go meow”.

Cala, the “I go Meow" cat passed away on May 30. Cala became a viral sensation for her strange “meow" that sounded like “I go meow". Her owner Elizabeth took to Instagram to share that the ginger cat was much older than she or the adoption shelter employees anticipated. Initially, Elizabeth had thought that Cala was a kitten when she was adopted but it later turned out that she was at least 12 years old. Despite much medical care, the cat passed away. Elizabeth shared a video compilation of Cala’s videos as she wrote, “Although we were optimistic and Cala fought very hard, she was not improving. Cala ultimately passed away in my arms due to old age. She was surrounded by humans who loved her."

This announcement prompted a slew of tributes to the iconic cat. Filmmaker Varun Grover commented, “Go well, rockstar Cala! Not a day goes by when I don’t sing her banger I Go Meow. This is heartbreaking. Hope she finds peace and gets reborn as a singer selling out stadiums and breaking records, all over again."

Another person wrote, “You beautiful, superstar, angel of a cat! So much character, so much personality, so much to say. Sing away at the rainbow bridge Cala. You are so loved, not only by your humans but by so many on the internet that you never got to know. You would’ve chatted away with all of them, I’m sure. So much love for your sweet angel."

Someone else wrote, “It took me three days to write something that reflected my feelings about Cala’s passing. I cried for her and I can only imagine Elisabeth’s pain. We must appreciate every moment together with our pets, we are everything to them. Rest in peace Cala, love you."

Cala’s strange “meow" was made into a song by South African Musician David Scott, also known by his stage name the Kiffness.

Scott had turned Cala’s sounds into a viral song with the hook lyrics, “I go meow, I go meow, I go meow, go meow. I don’t know who I am, look away, away." This video got over 28 lakh views on YouTube since it was shared on April 12. After the cat’s passing, Scott added a comment on his YouTube video and wrote, “A bright light has gone out, but Cala’s sweet little voice will go meow for eternity!"
