Just a couple of days ago, an incident from Mumbai, showing common people working together to save a man’s life, had gone viral. From the authorities to viewers on the internet, everyone had been praising the efforts and intentions of Mumbai commuters. However, despite the incident being one-of-a-kind and an example of the resilience of thousands of people working together, it looks like their effort was not enough to save the man. The incident occurred at Vashi station on Monday afternoon when a 48-year-old man named Rajendra Govind Khandke from Koparkhairane found himself in a dangerous situation after getting off a train.
The unfortunate incident took place as the man tried to cross the tracks in the opposite direction while a train was coming in. The Panvel bound suburban local train suddenly applied emergency brakes, halting just in time on the platform to avert disaster. However, by then, the man was already pinned beneath the engine.
Surveillance cameras caught the scary moment when Khandke realised the danger and jumped onto the tracks, but the train caught and dragged him.
Thankfully, some passengers acted quickly. They came together to help Khandke, pushing against the train to move it away and pull him to safety. Seeing this, eventually hundreds of commuters and bystanders at that time, immediately sprang into action, collectively exerting force to shift the massive 12-carriage locomotive to the side.

After the rescue, Khandke reportedly got basic medical care and was taken to Navi Mumbai Municipal Hospital in Vashi. Later, he was moved to JJ Hospital for further treatment. Someone recorded the brave rescue and shared it on Reddit. The person who shared it, said the train had just arrived at the station when the incident happened.
However, as reported by Mid-day, despite their efforts, Khandke couldn’t survive his injuries. The mishap took place on platform number 2 of Vashi station, close to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) end.
The railway officials confirmed the incident as a case of track trespassing, emphasising the importance of utilising designated crossings. The authorities pointed out that Vashi station has many underpasses to help people safely switch platforms and get around the station.
