Death is one of the greatest mysteries that has fascinated humanity for centuries. Despite advancements in technology and medicine, the question of what happens after we die remains unanswered. However, in 2019, a 68-year-old woman from Wichita, Kansas, had an extraordinary experience that deepened her belief in the afterlife. Charlotte Holmes was taken to the hospital for a sudden spike in blood pressure, but her condition quickly worsened. While the medical staff tried to revive her, she lost consciousness and was clinically dead for 11 minutes which is almost twice the five minutes doctors usually use to determine death.
During this time, Holmes claimed she experienced a journey to “Heaven," where she met angels, and family members and even caught a glimpse of “Hell." In conversation with The 700 Club, Holmes described her experience as a classic out-of-the-body experience, saying, “I was above my body. I could see them doing chest compressions. I could see them, all the nurses around. I could smell the most beautiful flowers I’ve ever smelled. And then I heard music."
This experience led her to a place she firmly believed was Heaven. “When I opened my eyes, I knew where I was. I knew I was in Heaven," she said with certainty.
In her description of Heaven, Holmes spoke of an overwhelming sense of “pure joy" without any fear.
“I could see the trees, I could see the grass. And everything was swaying with the music because everything in heaven worships God. It’s a million times, a million times above what we can even think of," she added.
She further told the Christian talk show that she was greeted by younger, healthier versions of her deceased family members and saints from history.
“I saw my mom. I saw my dad. I saw my sister. I saw family members standing behind me. I saw saints of old. They didn’t look old. They didn’t look sick. None of them wore glasses," she recalled.
After being briefly reunited with a child that she had lost when she was five-and-a-half months pregnant, Holmes’ experience took a darker turn, saying, “God took me to the edge of Hell."
“I looked down and the smell — rotten flesh — that’s what it smelled like, And screams. After seeing the beauty of Heaven, the contrast of seeing Hell is almost unbearable," Holmes said. This part of her journey was not just a glimpse into horror but a vital lesson.
“He says, ‘I show you this to tell you if some of them do not change their ways, this is where they shall reside.’ I heard my Father say, ‘You have time to go back and share’," Holmes added.
After her experience, Holmes felt a strong pull back to her body and awakened in her hospital bed. Just two weeks later, she was released. Inspired by her journey, Holmes dedicated the following years to sharing her story with anyone willing to listen.
“People need hope. They want to know that there really is something out there. They want to know that everything’s okay. It’s more real than you can imagine. I can look you square in the eye and tell you for sure, ‘Heaven is real’."
Throughout this experience, Charlotte’s husband, Danny, was by her side. He remembers a moment when Charlotte, still unconscious, began talking about flowers. “Well, I looked around, and I knew there were no flowers in that room. That’s when I knew she was not in this world," Danny told The 700 Club.
Charlotte continued to share her insights about Heaven and the afterlife until her passing on November 28, 2023, at the age of 72.
