Earlier, physical maps or approaching locals were the only options for seeking the right directions while travelling. However, the advent of technology has made it easier with the introduction of Google Maps, Apple Maps and other navigation applications. While Google Maps claims to have never missed anything on the radar, it is not always accurate. Besides being a very useful tool for planning routes and trips, it has also managed to capture some weird and hilarious moments, leading people to the wrong destinations.
Recently, one such image went viral on social media, where the locals took the matter into their own hands to highlight Google’s mistake by creating a makeshift sign board and warning travellers of Google’s navigation mistake.
Shared on the X handle of Kodagu Connect, the picture of the signboard reads, “Google is wrong. This road does not go to Club Mahindra.”

Going by the picture, it seems like the board has been set up by the residents who live nearby and have probably experienced instances of tourists going in the wrong directions because of the incorrect Google map destination.
As soon as the picture was shared, social media users also took to the comment section and were left divided as they came in with some really funny comments. A user wrote, “India is not for beginners!” while another one commented, “Ha ha ha google aunty is mostly wrong these days.”
A section of users also shared their own experiences, “True , Hd experienced long time back of their Madikeri property,” “So true. Not always google maps are right. Last week my sister went to sakleshpura, followed google maps which eventually let them to a dead end and car got stuck in bad road. Luckily some locals helped them. Never rely on navigation while visiting hill stations,” and “Once we climb up the mountains, Google always gets it wrong. Once I remember how we traveled from kukke Subramanya to Madikeri via sullia. Google made us take a random right in which we traveled for 80+ km realizing we are on wrong and got correct route by local person.”
Notably, this is not the first time that Google Maps has got it all confusing for travellers. Another similar incident took place in Kerala’s Koorachundu where a group of people travelling towards Wayalada Mullanpara tourist centre took a wrong shortcut and ended up in a pretty bad shape as their vehicle was overturned, thanks to the directions on Google Maps.
