Dowry, an age-old tradition among many Indian families, has been a topic of discussion and debate in recent years. While some families refrain from participating in this practice, others choose not to disclose the exchange. However, a recent video circulating on the internet has stirred controversy, as the footage captures a family publicly announcing the dowry presented to the groom’s family at a wedding in Uttar Pradesh’s Noida. Such an announcement has left social media users stunned, as it features gifts such as luxury cars, humongous amounts of cash and jewellery sets. The person who shared the clip and his family faced intense criticism. The user has since disabled the comments section, as viewers questioned them for demanding costly dowry items in the name of gifts.

The video captured a family representative announcing the list of dowry items at a wedding in Uttar Pradesh. The gifts included a dining table, other furniture items, a Mercedes Benz E Class 200, a Toyota Fortuner, 1.25 kilograms of gold and 7 kilograms of silver. The exchange also involved Rs 72 lakh, Rs 51 lakh and Rs 21 lakh in cash. Guests in the video are seen applauding after hearing the list of gifts presented during the wedding. In response, the groom’s family offered over Rs 1 Crore as kanyadaan amount to the bride’s side. The video has left social media users furious, with many expressing anger and urging others to file complaints against the involved families. On the other hand, some individuals called the family beggars, while others claim this as a business deal rather than a traditional ceremony.

Taking a strong stance against the dowry system can have a positive impact and an earlier viral video is a perfect example. The footage captured an elderly man confronting a groom who demanded a bike as part of the dowry. In the video, the older man, who is the groom’s father, is seen grabbing his son by the collar and hitting him with a slipper several times in front of the bride along with other guests.

The tense situation takes an unexpected turn when the groom’s father, frustrated with his son’s demand, informs him that he’ll sell his land to fulfill the request. Despite the heated exchange, the father tells him to bring his daughter-in-law home safely. Later, the atmosphere shifts as family members and relatives bid farewell to the bride.
