The Apple Airpods are a much sought-after accessory in the market. However, these portable earphones often accumulate dirt and grime on their delicate speaker meshes. Now, a video is going viral that shows a man using an unlikely cleaning agent to clean the accumulated dirt on the AirPods speaker mesh. The man uses a hot glue gun to clear the AirPods. He first pours a dollop of hot glue over the AirPods and then waits for the glue to solidify. Once the glue gets in an almost solid state, he takes a tweezer-like tool and tries to pluck out the glue.

The idea behind this experiment is that the glue will take up all the dirt and grime left on the AirPod mesh. However, this video has a very anti-climatic ending. When the man pulls out the hot glue, the dirt remains inside the AirPods, in fact, some of the bits of glue also get stuck on the mesh. This disappointing video was posted on Unilaid on March 8. So far it has over 13,000 likes.

In the comments, many people roasted the video for being a failure. An Instagram user described the video as “So much expected and so little delivered.” Expressing a similar sentiment, someone else wrote, “Well that was absolutely useless and a waste of my time.”

Another person wrote, “The person who’s spent the time to make this video must have some serious issues with common sense.” Taking a more sarcastic approach, an Instagram user wrote, “Oh wow. Look at all that invisible dirt it removed.” An Instagram user mentioned a simpler way of cleaning AirPods and suggested, “A toothpick changes everything.”

According to Apple’s customer support website, one should not use any abrasive material to clean AirPods. Neither should people dunk the AirPods into any cleaning agents. Any type of moisture can harm the AirPods. The company simply suggest, “Clean the microphone and speaker meshes with a dry cotton swab.”

To clean the outside of the AirPods one can use a “70-per cent isopropyl alcohol wipe, 75-per cent ethyl alcohol wipe or disinfectant wipes”. The brand suggests against using cleaning products that have bleach or hydrogen peroxide. Often just wiping the surface of AirPods with a damp cloth works well. Apple also warns people to not use their AirPods until they are completely dry.
