Surprising news often goes viral on social media and recently, one such story has caught everyone’s attention. A baby is usually considered safest in its mother’s womb, but can you imagine a newborn facing danger while still inside?
It was a shocking reality for a newborn in the US, whose life was threatened in a bizarre situation where the mother’s body “attacked” it, leading to a life-and-death struggle.
According to reports, the blood in the baby’s body was very different from the mother’s blood, due to which the mother’s body started considering the foetus as its enemy. The whole story is being seen as a rare case in the medical world. Let’s take a look.
Reports suggest the baby, named Arthur William, needed two emergency blood transfusions. Arthur is already a year old, but he did not develop as quickly as expected in the womb.
Doctors discovered the unborn baby had the same rare blood type as his father, Matt Williams, who is 33 years old and called Rh negative. Mother-of-three Sam Williams, who is 29 years old, had a different blood type, so her body saw the baby as a “foreign object,” and her immune system attacked it.
Arthur was born two weeks early, via C-section. Sam had an emergency and was promptly transferred to Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital in Cardiff with acute jaundice. She was seven months pregnant.
After a thorough checkup, doctors noticed Arthur was not growing fast enough, so they decided to check the parent’s blood group. After seeing Matt’s rare blood group, doctors warned that Arthur could be born with severe jaundice and could have hearing loss or cerebral palsy.
Following that, the doctors conducted an emergency meeting to see the emergency of the case. After a major discussion, doctors decided to deliver Arthur but ultimately opted to schedule a C-section at 36 weeks.
Arthur was born at 2 p.m. on September 6, 2022, at University Hospital Wales. After eight days in the hospital, he was discharged and is now a happy and healthy one.
