Picture yourself in the middle of a vast woodland, where even a stone is thrown with the odds of life or death. Popular YouTuber Mike Corey from Fearless & Far decided to accept this very challenge and had to go through lots of hardships to complete it while exploring the dangerous jungles of Yucatan, Mexico. His goal? For the chance to find the wreckage of an airplane, said to be once used by the notorious drug lord Pablo Escobar.
Corey’s three-day quest was not for the fainthearted. The moment they stepped into the jungle, he and his team were faced with grass with razor-like edges, ferocious ants and nightmarish swamps. “We knew this adventure was going to be intense, but right now we’re trying to hop over legs barefoot," Corey said, partly amused and partly scared.
By the third day, the fatigue had completely seeped into their bones. But just as hope was fading, they stumbled upon their prize: ruins of an aeroplane that was overgrown by the tall green trees.
“It’s spooky… it’s all just a net of spikes and hooks," he says.
“That’s it! We found it!" Corey could hardly contain his excitement at the discovery. This was not just any other wreckage; it was believed to be one of Escobar’s famous drug traffic aeroplanes that disappeared for almost 13 years after it crashed in 1966.
Corey’s thoughts then ran for issues like whether the plane crashed due to mechanical failure or was shot down. Inside, the calm, desolate feel of the cockpit was particularly morbid in light of the pandemonium that had once filled this aircraft. Empty drums rested close to one wing and appeared to be the remains of a forgotten history of drug smuggling.
While the man himself, Escobar, who was gunned down by Colombian police in late 1993, is no more, the legend of his crime empire remains.
Whether or not this plane was his, is today still a matter of speculation. What is for sure, the story of this plane does not wish to rest amongst the dead.
