One of the accused in the murder of Khalistan separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar was attacked by a fellow inmate inside the detention centre in Surrey, sources told CNN-News18. The attack, which was not serious in nature, happened under unclear circumstances, and the motive remains unknown.
The altercation may have been related to a personal dispute, but the exact reason for the attack has not been confirmed. The individual—whose identity has not been disclosed—is reportedly safe and did not sustain serious injuries, sources revealed.
Sources have also ruled out conspiracy theories suggesting that the attack was intended to eliminate evidence.
Earlier, on May 3, Canada’s Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) arrested three Indian nationals—Karan Brar, 22, Kamalpreet Singh, 22, and Karanpreet Singh, 28—in connection with the murder of the Khalistan separatist leader. They have been charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
On May 12, another accused, Amardeep Singh, 22, was also arrested on similar charges.
Nijjar was killed outside the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in Surrey, British Columbia, on June 18, 2023. The killing triggered diplomatic tensions between New Delhi and Ottawa.
The trial for these individuals has not yet begun, and they are currently being held in the Surrey detention centre.
CNN-News18 previously reported that the three accused—Brar, Singh, and Karanpreet Singh—were involved in drug trafficking in Canada and were allegedly connected to the Pakistani spy agency Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). It was claimed that these individuals were running operations from Canada and receiving funds from ISI for anti-India and pro-Khalistani activities.
“Gangsters are running operations in India sitting in Canada and many named accused by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) are living there. They were regularly getting money from ISI for anti-India and pro-Khalistani activities. From time to time we have given evidence but no support is given by Canadian government or their police,” the aforementioned officials had told CNN-News18.
“This is a case for the Canadian police and bringing the name of the Indian government is (making) allegations without proof,” they further added.
