New Delhi/Male: A boat carrying Maldives President Abdulla Yameen on his return from the Hajj pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia was hit by an on-board explosion. The president escaped unhurt while his wife suffered minor injuries. According to sources, it has been found out that ISIS could be behind the explosion.
This attack comes exactly a month after a video emerged with 3 suspected ISIS men issued a 30 day deadline to the Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen asking for the release of jailed Islamist opposition leader Sheikh Imran Abdullah. Islamic radicalisation has been on the rise in the Maldives since Yameen came to power.
More than 200 Maldivians have travelled to Syria to fight for the ISIS. Seven Maldivians fighting for the ISIS have been confirmed dead in the past one year.
