WARSAW: Two historians must apologise for a book which said that a Polish villager gave up Jews to the Nazi Germans, a Warsaw court ruled on Tuesday, in a case that academics say could curb research into the actions of Poles during World War Two.

Poland’s governing nationalist Law and Justice party (PiS) has said it views any investigation into complicity by Poles in the wartime slaughter of Jews as dishonouring the country.

But the editors of the two-volume work “Night without an end. Fate of Jews in selected counties of occupied Poland”, Barbara Engelking and Jan Grabowski, will not have to pay damages, the court ruled.

Engelking and Grabowski will appeal against the decision.
