Republican supporters were quick to target US President Joe Biden after he mistakenly referred to his Vice President Kamala Harris as “Vice President Trump” on Thursday. He made this gaffe at a closely watched press conference in Washington amid the NATO Summit.
When asked whether Harris could beat Donald Trump if he decided not to run again, the 81-year-old president said: “I wouldn’t have picked Vice President Trump to be vice president if I did not think she was not qualified to be president.”

‘Great job, Joe’
Trump, the 78-year-old presumptive Republican nominee, quickly ridiculed his successor in a statement on his Truth Social site. “Crooked Joe begins his ‘Big Boy’ Press Conference with, ‘I wouldn’t have picked Vice President Trump to be vice president… Great job, Joe!” Trump said. When asked for his thoughts on Trump using the gaffe to deride him, Biden gave a confusing response: “Listen to him.”

Biden’s candidacy has been in crisis since a disastrous debate performance against Trump two weeks ago renewed concerns around his age — and the rare solo press conference, lasting about an hour, was designed to show he still has what it takes.
The event, aimed to address growing calls from Democrats for Biden to step aside, only added to the concerns with contradictory remarks, forgotten questions, and rambling answers. Already the oldest president in US history, Biden said he was “not in this for my legacy” but to “complete the job I started.”
The US president has faced a steady drumbeat of Democrats calling for him to abandon his 2024 candidacy, fearing that Trump is in a position to beat him. More calls from House representatives came Thursday night after the news conference.
