It was the last ball of eight over when Mohammed Siraj trapped Pakistan opener Abdullah Shafique in front of the wicket.

Premier paceman Mohammed Siraj drew the first blood for India in the high-octane clash against Pakistan on Saturday at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. Siraj didn’t have the best of starts with the ball and got hit for three boundaries in the first over. He tweaked his line and length after the initial hiccup.

It was the last ball of eight over when Siraj trapped Pakistan opener Abdullah Shafique in front of the wicket. Meanwhile, skipper Rohit Sharma also contributed to the wicket as it was he who had a chat with Siraj before the delivery. The pacer went for a cross-seam delivery and the ball kept a bit low and hit the pads. It was an absolute plumb in front of the wicket as Rohit and Siraj celebrated the wicket by pointing at each other.

Meanwhile, Shafique and Imam-ul-Haq gave Pakistan a solid start on a surface where there was not much assistance for the pacers. The duo shared 41-run stand before Siraj dismissed Shafique for 20.

Earlier, Team India skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bowl first at a jam-packed Narendra Modi Stadium.

Young India opener Shubman Gill returned to the playing XI after recovering from dengue.

“We will bowl first, cannot get bigger than this, fantastic atmosphere. Sure lot of us are going to experience something really extraordinary. It’s a good track, not going to change much, dew could be a big factor and keeping that in mind, we want to bowl first. We want to keep striving for the best, we want to come out there and give our best in every game. Keeping the atmosphere in the team relaxed is the most important thing in a tournament like this. Gill is back in place of Ishan, unfortunate for Ishan to miss out, feel for him, he stepped up when we needed him. Gill has been a special player for us over the past year or so, especially at this ground and we wanted him back,” Rohit added.
