New Delhi: Union Minister for Science and Technology Kapil Sibal says that increase productivity in proportion to the rise in population is the new mantra to check price rise.
Addressing the first Chandigarh Science Congress, he said that agriculture production had remained stagnant for past few years while the number of mouths to feed were constantly on the rise.
"If your productivity is stagnant and population is on the rise then supply and demand scenario will fail to match, resulting in price rise," PTI quoted Sibal as saying.
"Inflation cannot be controlled in real sense unless agriculture productivity gets a boost, which can only happen when we invest in better seeds, which are not only pest-resistant but also consume less water.”
"We should grow more hybrid seed varieties and help farmers with genetic engineering, only then the productivity will increase," he added.
He also said that nearly 70 per cent of water used in agriculture in the country are drinking water.
"We are still using 1,000 tonne of water to produce one tonne of food grain. I think there has to be a technology where only 100 tonne of water is used to produce same amount of food grain," he told the scientists and researchers in the Science Congress.
Sibal said the ministry was working to find a scientific solution to solve the drinking water problem of those living along the country's coastline.
