New Delhi: Markets opened on a bad note on Tuesday and traded with extreme volatility through the day. Higher inflation and interest rates were also responsible for the heavy gyration on the bourses where in the last one hour's trade was really ferrocious.
The BSE Sensex closed down 99.72 points or 0.70 per cent at 14090.98, and the Nifty down 13.75 points or 0.34 per cent at 4044.55.
About 1028 shares have advanced, 1463 shares declined, and 68 shares are unchanged.
The BSE Small Cap Index closed at 7,088.15 down 39.11 points or 0.55 per cent. The BSE Midcap Index ended at 5,785.28 down 36.17 points or 0.62 per cent.
The BSE FMCG Index lost 0.9 per cent at 1,866.03. United Spirits, ITC, Nirma, HLL, Nestle closed in red.
The BSE Metal Index was down 1.5 per cent to close at 8,485.49. Hindalco, Tata Steel, Hind Zinc, JindalStainless, Mah Seamless were among the losers.
The BSE Bankex was down 1.3 per cent at 7,266.74. UTI Bank, HDFC Bank, Andhra Bank, PNB moved downwards.
The BSE Health Care Index was plunged 0.5 per cent at 3,724.13. Orchid Chemical, Cipla, Lupin, Ipca Labs, Biocon, Sterling Bio closed lower.
The BSE Capital Goods Index was down 1 per cent at 9,334.78. L&T, Greaves Cotton, Thermax, Aban Offshore ended lower
The BSE Auto Index closed at 5,539.55 down 0.3 per cent. Hero Honda, Sundram, Punj Tractors, Maruti Udyog, Ashok Leyland were among the losers.
The BSE IT Index closed at 5,366.54 down 1 per ent. HCL Info, Infosys, HCL Tech, Satyam ended weak.
The BSE Oil and Gas Index closed at 6,548.54 up 1.1 per cent.
The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 9995.7 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 49028.87 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 4861.81 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 63886.38 crore.
