After Dhanush went international in a big way by appearing as an assassin with a conscience in the Russo brothers’ Hollywood film The Gray Man, fans expected Dhanush to break box office records in his upcoming projects back home. His pongal release Captain Miller was extensively promoted. The expectations from the film were high owing to Dhanush’s newfound success as a global actor but the film fell below expectations. According to many critics, the screenplay of Captain Miller was flat and it just did moderate business commercially.
Dhanush has now put his focus on his second directorial venture titled Raayan. Apart from being his sophomore directorial, Raayan is also the actor’s 50th film. He had previously directed the feel-good movie Pa Paandi and Raayan will be his first attempt in the crime genre. Sudeep Kishan, Kalidas Jayaram and SJ Suriya also star in the film alongside Dhanush.
There have been some unconfirmed reports regarding the plot and setting of Raayan doing the rounds on the internet. It is said that this film is being developed as a gangster story based in North Chennai. Dhanush, Sudeep Kishan and Kalidas Jayaram are said to be brothers from ordinary households who go on to become gangsters and that forms the crux of the story, according to reports. The three brothers are also said to be shown running a fast food centre in the film. Rumours are also rife that if Raayan goes on to be a success, the makers are already thinking of making a sequel.
On February 19, Dhanush released the first look poster for Raayan. It showed Dhanush, Sundeep, and Kalidas holding sharp tools in their hands while standing in front of a food truck with aprons bloody.
Apart from Raayan, Dhanush is also collaborating with Telugu director Shekhar Kammula for a yet untitled film. Dhanush will also direct his third project named Nilavuku En Mel Ennadi Kobam, which is a romantic comedy.
