Ravichandran Ashwin was on fire for India in the first Test against Bangladesh. The 38-year-old spinner, who sits at No. 1 position in the ICC Test bowler’s ranking, picked up six wickets for 88 runs in the second innings to help India dismiss Bangladesh for 234 runs and win in the series opener by 280 runs. In addition to his bowling, Ashwin also made headlines with his batting. He amassed a total of 113 runs from 133 balls for the Rohit Sharma-led side to finish as the top scorer in the first inning.
For his all-round show in the Chennai Test, Ashwin won the Player of the Match award. The 101-Test veteran broke multiple records in the first match, and he now has a chance to break many more records in the second match as well, which is scheduled to take place at Green Park in Kanpur from Friday (September 27) onwards.
Here’s a look at records Ashwin can break in the 2nd Test between India and Bangladesh
Ashwin has 29 wickets to his name in seven Tests played so far against Bangladesh. He needs three more wickets to break Zaheer Khan’s record and become the leading wicket-taker in Test matches played between India and Bangladesh.
Ashwin needs one wicket to become the first Indian and overall sixth bowler in the world after Shane Warne (138), Nathan Lyon (119), Rangana Herath (115), Muttiah Muralitharan (106) and Glenn McGrath (103) to take 100 wickets in the fourth innings of Test matches.
Ashwin has picked up 48 wickets in nine WTC 2023-25 matches played so far. He needs four wickets to overtake Australia’s Josh Hazlewood and become the leading wicket-taker in the ongoing cycle.
If Ashwin manages to take a five-wicket haul in the second Test, he will break Shane Warne’s record of 37 fifers in Tests and take No. 2 position in the list of bowlers with most five-wicket hauls. Sri Lanka’s Muralitharan is in No. 1 position with 67 fifers.
Ashwin needs 8 wickets in the 2nd Test against Bangladesh to break Nathan Lyon’s record and become the leading wicket-taker in World Test Championship history.
If Ashwin, who has 522 wickets to his name in 101 Tests played so far, manages to dismiss nine batters in the Kanpur Test, he will break Lyon’s record of 530 wickets and become the 7th leading wicket-taker in Test cricket.
