Planning to watch India vs Pakistan in New York? Prepare to loosen the purse strings.
It will be cheaper to take a holiday in Barbados for a top fixture like Australia vs England, staying in a four-star hotel and returning back home via a direct flight. The “Diamond Club” seats for India-Pakistan have been priced at a silly $10,000 which will come out to be $10,863 (approximately Rs 9,00,000) with taxes.
The same amount of expenditure can fetch you two return tickets from New York to Barbados (approx. Rs 50,000 each), a stay in a four-star property (approx. Rs 60,000 for four nights) and two “Club Open Air” tickets ($650 each – approx. 1,08,000) for the June 5 clash between Australia and England.
If you put this all together, holiday for a couple in Barbados and premium seats of marquee fixture will come out to be around Rs 2,70,000. So if you have kids or extended family, there is enough budget left to accommodate them too. Even the next best category in New York is priced at $2,750 and the pricing will be somewhat closer to a couple holiday in Barbados + cricket.
It’s not a surprise that arguably the biggest cricket match on the planet, between neighbours India and Pakistan, still has tickets available. The premium category tickets are still available for the June 9 fixture. CricketNext has been tracking availability of tickets for the high-octane clash and only “Pavillion Club” is sold out – leaving at least three more categories still up for grabs. It is noteworthy that the hosts have increased the price for VIP parking at the Nassau County International Stadium from $200 (on May 23) to $250 (on May 27).
As far as other India fixtures are concerned, the organisers have made more tickets available. The “Standard Plus” category tickets for India vs Ireland and India vs USA were not available when checked on May 23. There were eight categories which were available for public purchase and the number has now (as on May 27) increased to nine categories for the games in New York.
Almost all categories for India vs Ireland and India vs USA have tickets available and even India vs Canada in Florida has availability in three categories. India’s first fixture – on June 5 vs USA – is a week away but continuous availability of tickets highlights how the International Cricket Council (ICC) has got their strategy wrong.
Even on May 28, there are plenty of sellers of India match tickets on social media platforms and there are very few buyers. Unlike the previous World Cups, there is very little activity on premium reselling websites because the availability on the official website continues to remain high.
The ICC is luring fans for a $10,000 India-Pakistan ticket with VIP parking, breakfast, pitch-side access, Q&A with a cricketing legend and private champagne lunch but even that hasn’t been able to do the job yet for the global cricketing body.
Twenty teams will be in action across USA and West Indies and ICC needs to pull up its socks in the home stretch of the tournament to ensure there aren’t any empty seats on display.
