A mountain to climb, and it’s Virat Kohli who conquered the same, as the talisman Indian batter finally added the ever-elusive T20 World Cup trophy to his cabinet of endless achievements as India clinched a nail-biting 7-run win over South Africa on Saturday.
With his win, Kohli has almost “completed” cricket, having clinched all possible ICC trophies in his career — the ODI World Cup, the T20 World Cup, and the Champions Trophy — except for one and in turn, achieved a record that no cricketer has. Not even MS Dhoni.
The above mentioned trophies are not the only ICC trophies Kohli has won. In fact, one needs to add the U-19 World Cup to his tally as well, and that makes Kohli only the second player in history to have won all four ICC trophies, surpassing Dhoni’s treble.
Now, Kohli stands apart from Yuvraj in a slightly different manner with his quadruple, as in the case of the legendary southpaw, Yuvraj clinched an ICC Champions Trophy that was shared with Sri Lanka, who were joint-winners back in 2002.
Kohli’s long-awaited T20 World Cup win did not come easy for the batter personally. Having started off the campaign on a disastrous note, failing to register a good innings throughout the tournament till the final, much seemed to have gone against the talisman batter.
But, cometh the hour cometh the man, and when all the chips were down and India were in need of a savior, up he rose once again as Virat Kohli put up a match-saving fight with the bat, to instill hope into the Indian ranks.
Following the early fall of wickets, which left India rudderless at 34-3, Kohli, alongside Axar Patel would go on to post an innings-reviving stand of 72 runs together with with the talisman playing the anchor, as Axar went on the offensive.
Kohli, who had been struggling in the tournament with the bat so far, led the way with calculated 76 runs off 59 balls, helping his side steer clear of imminent danger and to steady the ship for the eventual historic total of 176, which was defended successfully with the help of spirited pace trio of Arshdeep Singh, Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah.
All that stands in the way of eternal glory and the “completion” of cricket, is the Test Championship. And having ticked off all three boxes of white-ball cricket, Kohli will now turn his attention to achieve supremacy in red-ball cricket as well.
