The Delhi government has allocated Rs 16,377 crores to education in its 2021 budget as it rolled out several new initiatives in what has been dubbed as the “Deshbhakti” (patriotism) budget by the ruling Aam Aadmi Party. This accounts for almost one-fourth of the entire budget.
In the education sector, the Delhi government said it aims to set up its own state board, as it had announced last week. Under the yet-to-be-set-up board, Delhi aims to launch Deshbhakti (patriotic) curriculum. The new curriculum will have one period dedicated to it every day. Announcing the initiative last year, the AAP government had said that the curriculum will be implemented for KG to class 8.
Deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia, who also holds education and finance portfolios, also announced that Delhi will get its first Sainik School alongside a Delhi Armed Forces preparatory academy where besides regular studies, students will be acquainted with NDA coaching.
After spending an entire academic year imparting education virtually, Delhi now aims to start a virtual model school. Delhi government plans to open 100 schools of excellence, and teaching training will also be given special attention, Sisodia said in his Budget speech. Delhi will have a new Delhi Law University too, he informed. He further announced the launch of a mentorship programme called ‘Youth for Education’.
