Failing Thrice To AIR 8 In UPSC, A Look At IAS Surya Pal Gangwar's Inspiring Story
After trying again and failing thrice in a row, Surya Pal qualified for the UPSC exam in 2007 and was ranked 476.

Breaking all the odds and achieving something is what we all dream about. The story of IAS officer Surya Pal Gangwar is something similar. Gangwar, born in Bithri village of Bareilly district, Uttar Prades, went through numerous hardships at a very young age.

While recalling his childhood, Surya Pal mentioned that his father was a teacher and being the son of a teacher comes with several advantages and disadvantages as well. According to Gangwar, he was surrounded by many disciplinary rules at home. However, it felt good to him when his father used to check his exam copies.

Surya Pal Gangwar did his schooling up to Class 5 in a private school in Likhai Nawabganj town. Following the same, he was enrolled in the newly inaugurated Navodaya Vidyalaya in Bareilly. He continued in the same school up until his Class 12. Afterwards, he decided to pursue engineering and got admitted to the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee.

Gangwar also stated that he chose to enrol in IIT to pursue engineering and opt for a job as his family circumstances were not suitable enough for him could contribute to IAS preparations. After completing a B.Tech in Industrial Engineering from IIT, Roorkee Surya Pal Gangwar got a job in Kolkata, West Bengal. He worked in companies like Electrical Manufacturing Company Limited (ESC) and Philips India Limited. At the time of working in the corporate sector, he learned time management and excellent working methods.

In 2003, Surya Pal was selected as an Engineer in Air India Limited, Delhi. He joined his job at Air India Limited and continued to work till 2008. During the same time, he also prepared for the UPSC exam and appeared for the first time in 2004, but did not get success.

In 2005, he started preparing for the exam again but failed to qualify. After trying again and failing thrice in a row, Surya Pal qualified for the UPSC exam in 2007 and was ranked 476. Following the success, he was selected as an Assistant Commissioner in the IRS (Indian Revenue Service). Surya Pal worked in the designated department from 2008 to 2009 but appeared for the exam again that year, in which he secured 8th rank across the country and became an IAS.

Currently, Surya Pal Gangwar is serving as the DM and Collector of Uttar Pradesh’s capital city Lucknow from 2022. However, he has previously served as the DM of Hapur, Hathras, Sitapur, Rae Bareli, Siddharth Nagar and Firozabad.
